Learn the best way to lock/unlock your AADHAR

The Unique Identification Authority of India (uidai.gov.in) has given a special feature to protect Aadhaar. With this feature, you can lock or unlock your Aadhaar, in simpler terms, you can Lock-Unlock Aadhaar Card. This feature has been added to increase the privacy and security of Aadhaar. Once the Aadhaar Number is locked, it will not be used for verification. However, you can use your 16-digit virtual ID. The KYC process can also be completed with the virtual ID itself.

You will be able to use your Aadhaar for verification only when you unlock it. Be sure to create a virtual ID before locking the Aadhaar number. Only unless and until the virtual ID is ready, you will be able to lock your Aadhaar number.

Where can you create a virtual ID – 
You can create a virtual ID from the UIDAI website. Virtual ID can also be generated from SMS. You just have to keep in mind that your mobile number should be registered in the UIDAI database. Only then you will be able to generate virtual ID through SMS.

There are two ways to lock or unlock your base.

1. Through UIDAI website

2. Via SMS

Now let’s learn how to lock/unlock from UIDAI website –

If you want to lock/unlock your Aadhaar number from the UIDAI website (uidai.gov.in), then follow these steps.

To lock your Aadhaar, follow the simple steps.

Step 1: First of all go to www.uidai.gov.in.

Step 2: Click on the ‘My base’ tab. Click ‘Aadhaar Lock / Unlock’ in ‘Aadhaar Services’.

Step 3: Select ‘Lock UID’ option. Then fill in the details. These include Aadhaar number, name in Aadhaar record, PIN code and security code.

Step 4: After entering these details, click on ‘Send OTP’. OTP will come to your mobile number. This OTP will be valid for 10 minutes.

Step 5: Enter OTP and click on submit.

Step 6: Your Aadhaar number will be locked.

How to Unlock Aadhaar from the UIDAI website.

Step 1: First of all go to www.uidai.gov.in.

Step 2: Click on the ‘My base’ tab. Then click on ‘Aadhaar Lock / Unlock’ in ‘Aadhaar Services’.

Step 3: Select the ‘Unlock UID’ option. Then enter the previously created virtual ID and security code.

Step 4: Click on Send OTP. OTP will be sent to your mobile number. This OTP will be valid for 10 minutes.

Step 5: Enter OTP and click on submit.

Step 6: Your Aadhaar number will be unlocked. Lock / unlock Aadhaar with SMS.

You can also lock/unlock your Aadhaar by SMS. For this, you have to just send an SMS on 1947.

Steps to Lock your Aadhar through SMS –

Step 1: Send SMS on 1947 to get an OTP on your registered mobile number. It should be in the following format, GETOTP <SPACE> The last four digits of Aadhaar number.

Step 2: After sending SMS, you will get 6 digit OTP from UIDAI.

Step 3: You have to send another SMS like this. LOCKUID <SPACE> Last four digits of Aadhaar number <SPACE> 6 digit OTP number.

Once the SMS is sent, UIDAI will lock your Aadhaar. 

Steps to unlock your Aadhar through SMS –

Step 1: Send SMS on 1947 to get an OTP on your registered mobile number. It should be in the following format, GETOTP <SPACE> The last four digits of Aadhaar number.

Step 2: After sending SMS, you will get 6 digit OTP from UIDAI.

Step 3: You have to send another SMS like this. UNLOCKUID <SPACE> Last four digits of Aadhaar number <SPACE> 6 digit OTP number.

Once the SMS is sent, UIDAI will unlock your Aadhaar.
